The world, and by that I mean those outside of the church it’s not a derogatory statement in any way, comes up with all kinds of things that love means. And for every secular philosopher and poet that tells you love is easy you can just as many secular philosophers and poets to tell you that it’s hard and some that will tell you it’s both. As Christians our thoughts and attitudes about love are dictated by God and what His word says. And this Agape love that Christ has we cannot attain apart from Him. When we have been soundly saved and see our sinfulness in light of God’s holiness we should see that all mankind are sinners in need of God’s grace and that there is nothing we can do to be saved; it is God’s predestined gift to us.
In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, Ephesians 1:11
And that is the gospel message that we will be hated for. Why? Because Christ told us that’s how it would be. If Jesus and his disciples only preached a “love” message when they went into the entire world, they would’ve never been persecuted. So, we need to preach the FULL COUNCIL of God’s Word and be prepared to be hated for it. That is love…that we endure that hate that the world has of Christ. In general, people aren’t going to be tolerant of you making them think about their sinfulness in light of God’s holiness. The truth and revealing light of God’s Word is so abundantly clear that mans natural reaction is to run and hide from it, to not want to listen to it.
18 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. 22If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. John 15:18
